February 18, 1928, the Rev Cecil Brearley of Conway presided over the first Presbyterian worship service held in the city of Myrtle Beach.  By July of that same year, the members had erected a new chapel on the present site of “Mammy’s Kitchen” restaurant.  Aided by seminary students, Rev Brearley continued to supply the pulpit on the first and third Sunday evenings until 1940.  At that time, the congregation of 70 called the first full-time minister, the Rev FM Kincaid, who served in various capacities until 1961.

In 1948, the sanctuary was constructed at its present location between 13th and 14th Avenues North. Over the years, First Presbyterian Church has been involved in many community outreach programs, including organizing the Campground Ministry that has evolved into an ecumenical project of several area churches, as well as being involved with other local agencies such as Helping Hand, Mobile Meals, SOS Health Care, Myrtle Beach Haven, Street Reach, Horry County Shelter Home, and Habitat of Humanity.

The Rev Dr Robert C Wilkes, Jr. was called as the 5th full-time minister, and continues as Senior Pastor. Rev Christopher F Denny was called as Associate Pastor in 2005, joining Dr Howard Hansen who joined the staff as a part-time Associate Pastor in 1998.  Ansel Talbert also joined the staff in 2005 as Director of Student Ministries.

First Presbyterian Church’s goal of “Strong Today, Stronger Tomorrow” is being realized as construction is underway at our new location along Robert Grissom Parkway between 38th and 44th Avenues North.  Our new facilities will one day soon enable the church to move from its present location to offer more opportunities in worship, study, and fellowship.
