Dr. Jack Albrecht Sunday School Class

“Modern archaeology, history, theology, and Geography—all are combined with well imagined characters to serve up a page-turning fictional narrative in James Michener’s The Source. The story begins nearly twelve-thousand years ago at a well, near a vast expanse of rock…a town in a nameless land which will cover the weight of many years, bear such names as Canaan and Galilee, Palestine and Israel. Here is the entire history of the Jews: the first religions, the transition to monotheism, the life of the early Hebrews and how they were persecuted, the impact of Christianity, the Crusades, and the Spanish Inquisition, to the founding of present-day Israel and the Middle East conflict.” This class meets in room 103.

Books are available for purchase at the church office for $11.00.

Taste & See: Awakening Our Spiritual Senses

By Tim Dearborn

“In a plastic, shallow, secular, and often hurting world, we long for an encounter with the eternal God here on earth. Yet this is the God who can't be touched or seen - or can He? Tim Dearborn turns to Scripture and colorful life stories to remind us that the God known in Jesus Christ wants to reach us through our physical senses. He powerfully shows how we can be spiritually enriched through what we see, hear, smell, and taste. And he demonstrates that in the fellowship of Christians we find a ‘truth we can touch.’”

"Though our five senses aren't in themselves adequate vehicles for encountering the invisible God,” Dearborn writes, "behind each is a spiritual sense, which when awakened opens up for us the awareness of another world." Taste & See is your guide to that awakening and a richer, more God-centered life.”*

Plan to join us for a six week discussion on Mr. Dearborn’s book.

This class is limited to 15 participants, so register today.

January Book Discussion

Plainsong

By Kent Haruf

“A heartstrong story of family and romance, tribulation and tenacity, set on the High Plains east of Denver.*”

“In the small town of Holt, Colorado, a high school teacher is confronted with raising his two boys alone after their mother retreats first to the bedroom, then altogether. A teenage girl -- her father long since disappeared, her mother unwilling to have her in the house -- is pregnant, alone herself, with nowhere to go. And out in the country, two brothers, elderly bachelors, work the family homestead, the only world they've ever known.

From these unsettled lives emerges a vision of life, and of the town and landscape that bind them together -- their fates somehow overcoming the powerful circumstances of place and station, their confusion, curiosity, dignity and humor intact and resonant.*”

Date: Tuesday, January 22

Time: 2:00 PM

Location: In the Parlor

Cost:  $12.00 for book, available at the church office

Morning Book Study

Desire of the Everlasting Hills

By Thomas Cahill

In this seven week class, we’ll explore and discuss Mr. Cahill’s third volume in the Hinges of History series. Desire of the Everlasting Hills is a “unique presentation of Jesus and his times is for believers and nonbelievers alike (for Jews and Christians, it is intended by the author as an act of reconciliation).*”

In his “most daring and provocative subject yet: Jesus of Nazareth, the central figure of Western civilization,” Thomas Cahill “introducing us first to ‘the people Jesus knew,’ Thomas Cahill describes the oppressive Roman political presence, the pervasive Greek cultural influence, and especially the widely varied social and religious context of the Judaism in which Jesus moved and flourished. These backgrounds, essential to a complete understanding of Jesus, lead to the author's stunningly original interpretation of the New Testament--much of it based on material from the ancient Greek brilliantly translated by the author himself--that will delight readers and overcoming the powerful circumstances of place and station, their confusion, curiosity, dignity and humor intact and resonant.*”

Date: Beginning Wednesday, January 30

Time: 2:00 PM

Location: In the Parlor

Cost:  $12.00 for book, available at the church office
