First Presbyterian offers a graded choir program for children and youth, starting in 1st grade. Children's choirs sing monthly in Sunday worship and on festival days in the church. For additional information, please contact Linda Downes, Director of Children, Youth & Handbell Choirs.
Grades 1 & 2: LOGOS Mid-Week Program
The musical heritage of our faith is introduced through attendance at weekly rehearsals, which establishes an important sense of commitment. Musical focus is placed on finding the singing voice, increasing the singing range, learning how to follow a director, and beginning note reading skills. Choir members begin using the hymnal, learn to play a variety of instruments, and experience music through movement. This first choir experience teaches children how to be musical leaders through Sunday worship participation.
Grades 3, 4 & 5: LOGOS Mid-week Program
Children begin a regular pattern of leading and participating in worship. Musical and vocal skills are expanded upon, with an emphasis on vocal development and note reading. During the first year, Chorister Choir members work toward earning a pewter cross. Goals are set in September and if accomplished, the child is awarded the Chorister’s cross at the end of the choir season. Children wear the earned cross with their choir robes during Sunday worship participation. The Chorister Choir sings monthly in Sunday worship and on special occasions. A semi-staged spring musical highlights the choir year.
Children and Youth are encouraged to offer their musical talent to the glory of God during worship. For further information, contact Linda Downes, Director of Children, Youth & Handbell Choirs.
