Peace be with you…
During the first two weeks of June, my family and I were in the mountains of North Carolina at the Montreat Conference Center. Montreat is one of the conference centers supported by the Presbyterian Church (USA). During our time at Montreat, Mary and I were volunteering during weeks I & II of the Montreat Youth Conference as members of the support staff.
Mary was an office manager and a back – home leader for high school students without a back – home group of their own. I was the conference pastor and a small – group leader. As conference pastor, I was on call for attendees of the conference. If there had been any crises for which someone would need spiritual care from a pastor, I would have responded. In addition to this, I also led devotions and Bible studies with conference leadership. It was a great honor to be invited to serve the Montreat Conference Center and the Church is these roles.
As you can imagine, Perry was the conference mascot. He held court three times a day in the dining hall and charmed his way through day – camp and childcare. These were indeed memories that we will treasure for many years to come.
The theme for the Montreat Youth Conference this year is A Missing Peace. This certainly was an appropriate topic for our world in these days. The conference allowed high school students to have open and honest conversations about how peace is missing from our world and from their personal lives. From these conversations, we witnessed healing and reconciliation empowered by the God we know in Christ.
Through fun and games, in worship and music, almost 2,000 high school students gained a deeper understanding of the Peace of Christ during the two weeks we were in Montreat. Mary, Perry, and I look forward to going back with the high school youth from FPC for week VI of the Montreat Youth Conference (July 23 – 29).
