What is Stephen Ministry?

John 15:12 Jesus said: “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

The primary role of a Stephen Minister is to listen to one of God’s children that are currently going through a life transition.  To listen without judging, keeping everything shared in total confidence, and without trying to fix the situation.  We leave the fixing up to God.  The purpose of a Stephen Minister is to reflect God’s love in all the ways they can for one hour a week that they meet with that person.  Through guidance, direction, and distinctively Christian caregiving, a Stephen Minister will walk with you through this journey of restoration.

A Stephen Minister goes through an initial 50-hour training program.  After that they continue their training twice a month.  Stephen Ministers are the ears that listen, the hands that hold, and the heart that cares.

Why Stephen Ministry?

Galatians 6:2 Paul says: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.”

Sometimes people suffer in silence when their life is in turmoil.  Often times they don’t need someone to fix the turmoil, what they need is emotional support.  Someone who will listen to them and someone who cares.  That is what a Stephen Minister does.  They are often referred to as the “after people.”  They provide comfort and support after the divorce, after the death, and after others have gone home.  They are also there during the illness, and the recuperation, during the loneliness, and during the stress overloads.  Caregivers often feel overwhelmed and appreciate having a Stephen Minister to talk to as well.

Who are Stephen Ministers?

They are men and women that genuinely care about others.  God has blessed them with a compassionate heart and strong listening skills.  They are members of FPC and they look forward to serving you, as your Stephen Minister.

Who should receive a Stephen Minister?

Those who should receive the care of a Stephen Minister are —

• Someone going through divorce
• Someone going through a tough economic situation
• Someone that feels lonely
• Someone grieving over the death of a loved one
• Someone going through an illness/hospitalization
• Someone suffering through stress or anxiety
• Someone providing caregiving to another
• Someone new to the area, trying to adjust
• Someone feeling overwhelmed with trying to navigate life
• Someone experiencing family issues
• Someone facing a job or career crisis
• Someone dealing with aging issues

These are a few reasons why someone could request a Stephen Minister, but certainly not all.
